Privacy Policy

Asterysk is a browser extension that provides an AI chat assistant overlay for any webpage. This privacy policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and how it is stored.

Asterysk does not collect, transmit, or store any data on external servers operated by us. We have no servers, no analytics, and no tracking. All data stays in your browser.

All data sharing is initiated by you. No data is sent to any AI provider until you configure your own API key and actively send a message. The extension does not collect personal information such as names, email addresses, location data, or browsing history.

The following data is stored locally in your browser using the browser's built-in extension storage (chrome.storage.local):

• API Keys: Your API keys for AI providers (Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic) are stored locally so the extension can make requests on your behalf. These keys never leave your browser except when sent directly to the respective AI provider's API.
• Settings & Preferences: Your chosen AI provider, model selection, theme preference, custom system prompt, and other configuration options.
• Conversation History: Chat messages are stored per-domain (up to 50 conversations with up to 50 messages each) so you can resume previous conversations. This data is stored entirely in your browser's local storage.

When you use the chat feature, the following data is sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider:

• Your messages: The text you type in the chat.
• Page context (if enabled): A text excerpt of the current webpage (up to 12,000 characters) to give the AI context about what you're viewing. This can be disabled in settings.
• Screenshots (if you use the screenshot feature): A capture of the visible tab is sent to the AI provider for visual analysis.

Data is sent to one of the following providers, depending on your configuration:

• Google (Gemini API) — Google's Privacy Policy
• OpenAI (API) — OpenAI's Privacy Policy
• Anthropic (Claude API) — Anthropic's Privacy Policy

No data is sent to any provider until you configure your own API key and actively send a message. The extension makes no background network requests.

The extension requests the following browser permissions:

• activeTab: To detect when you click the extension icon and to capture screenshots when requested.
• storage: To save your settings and conversation history locally.
• contextMenus: To provide a right-click menu option for sending selected text to the chat.
• Host permissions (API endpoints only): To send requests to the AI provider APIs listed above. No other websites are contacted.

All data is stored locally in your browser. You can delete it at any time by:

• Clearing conversations from the extension's options page.
• Removing API keys from the options page.
• Uninstalling the extension, which removes all stored data.
• Clearing your browser's extension storage via browser settings.

Asterysk is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.

If we update this privacy policy, the changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
